Public trust requires thoughtful contingency plans that uphold constitutional rights and freedom of conscience, support medical ethics, and encourage voluntary cooperation with disease containment strategies. Yet State legislatures have rushed to enact ill-conceived, ineffective legislation. Public policy is not recognizing and respecting the rights, dignity, and intelligence of individuals. The public lied to and controlled is not a cooperative public. Health officials have been empowered to harm the very people legislators say they want to protect, this latest 2-year public-health emergency has become a crisis of the public’s trust.
